- In the Kyoto Shimbun Hai, he won his first grade-race.
- In the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), he was 3rd favorite.
Air Shakur was 1st favorite.
Air Shakur’s jockey Yutaka Take was expected to win the Derby three times in a row, following Special Week two years ago and Admire Vega the previous year.
Agnes Flight’s jockey Hiroshi Kawachi, on the other hand, is the senior disciple of Yutaka Take, and although he was considered a great jockey, he had yet to win a Derby.
///
In the home stretch, Air Shakur took the lead.
Agnes Flight caught up with Air Shakur.
They finished side by side.
Agnes Flight won by 7cm.
Kawachi became the Derby jockey he had dreamed of.
///
The live commentary on the TV broadcast of this race is considered to be a masterpiece.
エアシャカール、豊だ:
Air Shakur, Yutaka!
アグネス、河内の夢も飛んで来ている:
Agnes, Kawachi’s dream is coming in flying!
エアシャカールかエアシャカールか、それともアグネスかアグネスか:
Air Shakur!? Air Shakur!? or Agnes!? Agnes!?
河内の夢か、豊の意地か、どっちだあああ:
Kawachi’s dream!? or Yutaka’s pride!? Which one!? - In the Kikuka Sho, he was 1st favorite.
He finished 5th and Air Shakur finished 1st.
Air Shakur became a Double Crown horse.
Air Shakur would have been a Triple Crown winner if he hadn’t lost the Derby by 7 cm. - In the Japan Cup (2000), he was 4th favorite.
Agnes Flight, Air Shakur, and the other three-year-olds were up against T.M. Opera O and the other older horses.
But the Japanese 3-year-old horses were no match for older-horses, and they dominated the bottom four. - In April 2001 (age 4), he developed a bowed tendon.
His young-brother, Agnes Tachyon, developed a bowed tendon in May.
Agnes Tachyon’s overwhelming performance allowed him to retire and become a stallion in August.
But Agnes Flight couldn’t retire and had to be treated and kept active.
He eventually retired without winning a single race after the Derby.
Evaluation of him
- He’s certainly a memorable horse.
His victory in the Derby made it three generations of Agnes Lady’s family to win the classic races.
He is the horse that made Kawachi a Derby jockey. - However, since Agnes Flight and Air Shakur and others did not win at all against other horses of their age, it is often said that the level of classic races for horses born in 1997 is very low.
For this reason, they are sometimes cynically referred to as ” It is a good thing Air Shakur did not win the Triple Crown” or “Agnes Flight is a hero for preventing the birth of Air Shakur, the worst Triple Crown winner in history.
There are those who say more bad things about him than they should, but of course there are many fans who celebrate his glory.
(Agnes Digital, Tap Dance City and Eishin Preston, who were born in 1997, did well against other horses of their age, but they couldn’t run in the classic races because they were foreign-born.) - His brother, Agnes Tachyon, is a successful sire, but he isn’t.
He got sick the first and second years after he became a stallion, which meant he couldn’t breed much.
