  • Bizen Nishiki was entered in the Yayoi Sho, the trial race for Satsuki Sho, with a record of 4 wins from 4 starts with Yukio Okabe riding.
Here, one choice by Yukio Okabe caught attention.
Okabe said, “Please consider my choice to be the stronger one,” and chose Symboli Rudolf, who had three wins in three races, instead of Bizen Nishiki.
Bizen Nishiki’s owner was furious at Okabe and would not let him ride any of his horses after that.
  • In the Hichi Hai Yayoi Sho, he was 1st favorite.
    Symboli Rudolf was 2nd favorite.
Bizen Nishiki was delayed at the start of the race.
He passed the horses in front of him, but could not catch up to Symboli Rudolf and finished 2nd.
  • He then ran in the Spring Stakes, another trial race for Satsuki Sho, and came in 1st.
  • In the Satsuki Sho, he was 2nd favorite.
    Symboli Rudolf was 1st favorite.
Bizen Nishiki positioned just outside Symboli Rudolf in the final corner and tried to pass him in the home stretch.
However, Bizen Nishiki was blocked in his path by Symboli Rudolf and finished 2nd.
Symboli Rudolf, the winner, broke the race record by a large margin, and even Bizen Nishiki, the 2nd place finisher, had a time that broke the conventional race record.
    ///
Bizen Nishiki’s trainer, Akimitsu Narumiya, appealed to JRA about Symboli Rudolf’s rough running.
At that time, JRA did not have a demotion system, only a disqualification system.
Symboli Rudolf was not disqualified, and his order of finish remained the same.
(This race led JRA to start considering the introduction of a demotion system.)
The jockey, Okabe, was suspended for two days.
The trainer, Narumiya, was so angry with Okabe that he did not allow him to ride any more horses under his management.
  • In the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), he was 2nd favorite.
He finished in 14th place due to his lack of aptitude for long distances and fatigue from the overcrowded schedule.
  • In the autumn, he set his sights on a short distance race and ran in the Swan Stakes.
He broke down during the race and finished in 12th place, the lowest of the horses that could finish the race.
He retired as a racehorse with the reputation of a rival to Simboli Rudolf.

As a sire

  • His most famous crop is Daitaku Helios, who has won two G1 races.
  • His other crops include Hashino Kenshiro, who won three G3 races, and Return Ace, who won the JRA Award for Best Steeplechase Horse in 1995.
  • He was a cheap stallion and produced many foals with poor quality mares, but he did well.
