Salios had won the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes.
It was the first time that a horse that won the Asahi Hai was not selected for the award.
  • In the Satsuki Sho, the first classic race, he was the 1st favorite.
The showdown between Contrail and Salios was notable.

  • A week before the Kikuka Sho, the third classic race, Daring Tact became an undefeated Triple Crown filly.
Contrail was expected to be the first Triple Crown horse since Orfevre and the first undefeated Triple Crown horse since his sire Deep Impact.
And many fans expected to see two undefeated Triple Crown winners in the same year.
The crowd that wasn’t there because of COVID-19 was back in limited numbers.
    ///
In the race, he was by far the most favorite.

(Salios didn’t run in the race.)
He took the lead at the beginning of the last-home stretch.
He was nearly passed by Aristoteles, but he persevered and won.
He became a brilliant, undefeated Triple Crown horse.
  • In the Japan Cup (2020), Three Triple Crown winners, Almond Eye Contrail and Daring Tact, ran.
It was the first time in history that three Triple Crown winners had run in the same race.
Almond Eye was the 1st favorite, Contrail was the 2nd favorite and Daring Tact was the 3rd favorite.
Contrail passed Daring Tact, but could not catch up with Almond Eye.
In the end, first place went to Almond Eye, second place by 1+1/4 lengths went to Contrail, and third place by a neck went to Daring Tact.

The race was run on the same 2400 meter turf at Tokyo Racecourse as the Derby, and Contrail won the last race by 2 lengths.
  • He retired and will begin working as a stallion in 2022.
