- Daitaku Helios did not run the classics races because his connections thought it was the long distances for him.
He could not win a G1 race at the age of three. - In the Keio Hai Spring Cup (1991), he lost to Daiichi Ruby.
It was his first race with Daiichi Ruby. - In the Yasuda Kinen (1991), Daitaku Helios took the lead in the home stretch.
Then Daiichi Ruby came from behind and overtook many horses.
After all Daiichi Ruby won and it was a first G1 win for her.
(2nd: Daitaku Helios , 3rd: Bamboo Memory) - In the Takamatsunomiya Hai, he won by a nose.
He defeated Daiichi Ruby for the first time. - In the Mile Championship, he took the lead early.
He won the race by 2.5 lengths. - In the Arima Kinen (1991), he finished in 5th place.
It was a long distance for him, but he showed a decent run.
- In the Yomiuri Milers Cup (1992), his impost(weight) was heavy. (60kg)
But he won the race by 5 lengths. - In the Mainichi Okan, he broke the record time.
- In the Mile Championship (1992), he won and broke the record time.
It was two wins in a row in the same G1 races.
Episode (Same discription as Daiichi Ruby’s post)
- Daiichi Ruby and Daitaku Helios are often spoken and written together.
The reason is they had similar name (starting “Dai”) and ran many races together. - Especially, it was often spoken as a love story.
There are various reason. - A love story about them was written in popular horse racing manga “Umanari 1 furlong theater” (writer Yoshida Miho).
(Helios Ruby: A Love Story)” available for free on netkeiba.
Helios Ruby: A Love Story has parts one through three and extras one and two.
(I think there are no books or services translated into English.)
- In some of the numbered versions of the PC game “Winning Post”, when Daiichi Ruby and Daitaku Helios are mated, a special horse is produced.
- Daiichi Ruby is a well-bred horse.
She had a impression of a gentlewoman of good family.
Daitaku Helios is a unique horse.
He was called such as
“稀代の癖馬 (Rare and Peculiar Horse / Unusual Habitual Horse / Rarely a Quirky Horse)”,
“新聞を読む馬 (Horse reading newspapers)”,
“オッズを見る馬 (Horse checking the odds)” and
“笑いながら走る馬 (Horse running with laughter)”.
It was easy to fantasize and create a story based on these characteristics of theirs. - In the real world, Daitaku Helios was never chosen as Daiichi Ruby’s mating partner.
About his nickname written in the Episode
(Rare and Peculiar Horse / Unusual Habitual Horse / Rarely a Quirky Horse)”
He often showed a better run when he was a bad condition or out of temper. (Horse checking the odds)”
He won only once when he was 1st favorite.
He gave fans the impression that he was motivated when he wasn’t favorite.
(Horse running with laughter)”
His running-form was high-head and sometimes he shook his head from side to side.
Sometimes he opened his mouth and showed his teeth and tongue in paddocks and races.
