The Derby horse King Kamehameha had retired.
    There were no major candidate.

He took the lead in the home stretch and won by 1+1/4 lengths.
It was his first G1 win.
And it was a first G1 win for his jockey Yasunari Iwata and his trainer Katsuhiko Sumii.
  • In 2005 (age 4), he rested for the spring season because he was tired from the previous year.
He returned in the autumn and won the Stayers Stakes.
  • In 2006 (age 5), he lost to Deep Impact in the Hanshin Daishoten and the Tenno Sho (Spring).
His connections decided to go to Australia with Pop Rock in the same stable.
  • In the Caulfield Cup, Delta Blues finished 3rd.
    Pop Rock finished 7th.
  • In the Melbourne Cup, he was 7th favorite.
Yeats, the Europe Champion Stayer, was 1st favorite.
Delta Blues took the lead 400m before the finish-line.
Pop Rock followed him hard but couldn’t overtake him.
Japanese horses were first and second.
Delta Blues’ and Yasunari Iwata’s names became a little more famous in Australia.
  • He never won after the Melbourne Cup.
In 2007 (age 6), his connections planned to go to Australia again.
But the plan didn’t come true due to Equine influenza.
  • He couldn’t be a stallion because his blood as stayer was hated.
