- He was already highly regarded for his qualities as a two-year-old, but because his physical condition was not strong enough, he ran only two races as a two-year-old.
- In the Kyodo Tsushin Hai, he was the 4th favorite.
He easily won by 2+1/2 lengths over the 2nd-place finisher, Victipharus.
Shahryar came in 3rd place. - In the Satsuki Sho, he was the 2nd favorite.
He took the lead at the start of the homestretch.
He went on to finish 1st, 3 lengths ahead of the 2nd-place finisher, Titleholder.
It was his first G1 win.
It was also the first G1 victory for his jockey, Takeshi Yokoyama. - In the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), he was the 1st favorite.
He took the lead midway down the homestretch and looked like he would go on to win.
However, just before the finish line, he was overtaken by Shahryar in what could be described as a surprise passing, and finished 2nd.
He suffered his first loss. - In the Tenno Sho (Autumn), he was the 3rd favorite. (Contrail was the 1st and Gran Alegria was the 2nd favorite.)
He passed Gran Alegria about 200 meters before the finish line and finished 1 length ahead of 2nd-placed Contrail.
It was the first time in 19 years since Symboli Kris S that a 3-year-old had won the Tenno Sho (Autumn). - In the Arima Kinen (2021), he was the 1st favorite.
He began to move on the last corner and took the lead in the middle of the homestretch.
Deep Bond and Chrono Genesis followed him but could not catch up.
Efforia won his third G1 race. - By the end of 2021, he had a nearly perfect racing record, despite an unfortunate loss in the Derby.
He won the 2021 JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Colt and the JRA Award for Horse of the Year.
It had been 4 years that a colt had been Horse of the Year since Kitasan Black, and 10 years that a 3-year-old colt had been Horse of the Year since Orfevre.
His performance symbolized a generational shift for several reasons: the mares had been active for a long time, his jockey, Takeshi Yokoyama, was young, and his sire, Epiphaneia, was still a fresh stallion. - Everyone thought that Efforia would have a spectacular run after 2022.
However, he finished 9th in the Osaka Hai.
Various reasons were floated for his defeat, including injuries, long-distance transportation, and heat on the mares. - He then failed to regain his form, finishing 6th in the Takarazuka Kinen and 5th in the Arima Kinen.
- In his first race in 2023, at Kyoto Kinen, he developed atrial fibrillation on the last corner, began to stall, and stopped just before the finish line.
After the race, his connections conferred and it was announced that he would be retired and become a stallion. - He became a stallion in a hurry just before the breeding season, and there were concerns about whether he would be able to attract mares.
However, his first year’s stud fee was 3 million yen, which was relatively inexpensive considering his race record, and he became a book full stallion in his first year.
I hope for his success in the future!
