Oka Sho and the Incident of Losing Isono Roubles’ Shoes

  • In the Oka Sho, the first classic race, she was 1st favorite.Ten minutes before the race started, her shoe came off.
Her connections tried to reattach the shoes to her, but they failed because she was in a state of excitement.
They suggested to JRA that they get her to leave the track for once to cool down her excitement and put her shoes on.

But JRA didn’t approve of the suggestion and just started the race.
At this point, the fact that her shoe had come off was announced to the crowd by an in-place announcement.
But JRA didn’t tell the crowd that they failed to reattach her shoes.

After all she lost to Sister Tosho and finished 5th.

The media pointed out that JRA had forced the start of the race to be televised on time.
In response, JRA offered the following explanation.

  1. Considering the effects on the other horses if it took a long time to reattach them, and the the judgement that not wearing horseshoes would not be a decisive factor in diminishing their ability to race, we made it a priority to start quickly.
(By no means was it a priority to fit in the time of the TV broadcast.)
  2. However, we were humbly accepting about the criticism of the failure to let the crowd know that the horseshoe fitting had failed.

The fact that the JRA didn’t inform the crowd of the failure of the shoe fitting attracted criticism from horse racing fans as well.
People who bet on her have filed a civil suit against JRA about it.
The court dismissed the plaintiff’s claim, stating that “It is not a violation of the Horse Racing Act for JRA to start a race without informing the crowd that a horseshoe was not fitted” and that “The effect of not fitting the horseshoes on the ability to race is unclear”.

//////////

  • In the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks), the second classic race, she was 4th favorite.
She made a good start from the outermost gate and took the lead quickly.
She went on to finish the race without being overtaken by any other horse.
It was her first G1 win.
  • In the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, she finished 16th.
She was found to be injured and retired.
