  • The Second Horse Racing Boom reached its highest point.
A crowd of 196,517 people gathered on the day of the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), which is still probably a world record.
And even on the day of Arima Kinen, the retirement race for Oguri Cap, a record crowd at Nakayama Racecourse of 177,779 people gathered.
  • After Ines Fujin won the Derby, the crowd chanted “Nakano! Nakano!” for his jockey Eiji Nakano.
It was the first time in history that something like this had happened.
Some analysts see this as the moment when Japanese horse racing changed from mere gambling to a sport and entertainment show.
  • When Oguri Cap won the Arima Kinen, the crowd chanted “Oguri! Oguri!” and “Yutaka! Yutaka!” for Oguri Cap and the jockey Yutaka Take.
This victory, called a “Miracle Revival (or Miracle Comeback)”, became an essential part of the history of Japanese horse racing.
  • Sprinters Stakes upgraded from G2 race to G1 race.
