- In the Saudi Arabia Royal Cup, he won by 1+1/4 lengths.
He broke the 2-year-old record for the 1600-meter on the turf at Tokyo Racecourse.
His breeder, Katsumi Yoshida, jokingly praised his potential and future prospects, saying, “Next year’s Derby horse has been decided. - In the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes, he was the 1st favorite.
He had a great win, dominating by 2+1/2 lengths.
It was his first G1 win.
He broke the race record.
His weight of 538 kg at this time was the highest weight for a 2-year-old G1 race winner. - He had a great performance as a 2-year-old, winning all three races, but the Best Two-Year-Old Colt went to Contrail.
It was the first time in history that the winner of the Asahi Hai was not selected as the Best Two-Year-Old Colt. - In the Satsuki Sho, he was the 3rd favorite.
He took the lead in the straight but was soon overtaken by Contrail.
He continued to follow Contrail but lost by 1/2 lengths. - In the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), he was the 2nd favorite.
He finished 2nd, but this time beaten by 3 lengths by Contrail.
Contrail won the two classic races without losing a single race. - In the summer and autumn, Contrail naturally set his sights on the Kikuka Sho, the third of the classic races, but Salios was considered suitable for the distance and would run in races from 1600 meters to 2000 meters.
- In the Mainichi Okan (2020), he was the 1st favorite and won by 3 lengths.
It was the first time since the establishment of the grading system that a horse won the Mainichi Okan by more than 3 lengths.
(Before that, it had been 51 years since Takeshiba O won the Mainichi Okan by more than 3 lengths in 1969, when the race was held on the 2100 meter dirt track.)
He also broke Daiwa Major’s record for winning the Mainichi Okan at the highest weight. - After the 2020 Mainichi Okan he ran in the Mile Championship instead of the Tenno Sho (Autumn) but finished 5th.
After that, he ran once in the Osaka Hai at 2000 meters, finishing 5th, and never raced over 2000 meters since then.
He would go on to run mostly mile races. - The requirements of the races in which he excels is a point that horse racing fans have often discussed.
For example, he may be long bodied and therefore suited to long distances, or he may be heavy and therefore suited to short distances, or he may prefer a track with gentle corners and long stretches, or he may prefer a smaller track.
Some of them were not sure if they were joking or serious, such as the opinion that dirt racing is better.
There were probably horse racing fans’ expectations of the great qualities he possessed and their frustration that he would run mile races and lose. - In the Takamatsunomiya Kinen, it was his first 1200 meter race and he finished 15th.
- In the Mainichi Okan (2022), he was the 1st favorite.
Besides him, there were three other G1 horses in the race – Potager, Lei Papale, and Danon the Kid – and he won the race by setting a new race record.
He was the first since Oguri Cap to win the Mainichi Okan twice. - He was then scheduled to retire after the Hong Kong Mile, but due to the condition of his leg, the organizers of the Hong Kong Mile did not allow him to run.
His trainer said that his legs were in good enough condition to run in Japan, but the organizers in Hong Kong probably did not allow him to run because of a serious accident in the Hong Kong Sprint the previous year. - He retired and will be a stallion at Shadai Stallion Station starting in 2023.
It could be said that Salios would’ve gotten more recognition/wins if Contrail wasn’t there but if he had stuck to the mile route, there would have still been other stiff competition, such as Gran Alegria
I think it would be much harder to imagine Salios beating Gran Alegria in a mile race than it would be to imagine Salios beating Contrail.
It is also true that it would be very tough for Salios, though, with Almond Eye, Chrono Genesis, Efforia and Equinox in addition to Contrail in races over 2000 meters in the same period.
